John David “Jack” Titchener

FAYETTEVILLE — John David “Jack” Titchener, 89, formerly of Wilson, passed away on Nov. 23, 2011 after a lengthy illness. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Maplewood Cemetery, Wilson. The Rev. Marty Stebbins will officiate.

John David “Jack” Titchener was born December 30, 1921 in Cortland, New York to the late Walter Edmund Titchener and the late Ruth Lindberg Titchener. He moved with his family to Wilson in 1933 during the Depression. He graduated from The Baylor School for Boys in Chattanooga, Tenn. in 1940 and enrolled in UNC-CH, where he participated in Navy ROTC and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. In 1942, he enrolled in the U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School in Chapel Hill, went on to Hutchinson, Kansas and Corpus Christie, Texas for U.S. Navy Flight School, and after earning his wings, he went on to Jacksonville Naval Air Station for flight training. From there, Jack went to the Pacific Theatre, where he served with distinction in several major campaigns, including Iwo Jima and the Phillippines, as a carrier pilot, flying the F6F Hellcat. In 1943, he married his high-school sweetheart, Elizabeth Cook Rogers, who predeceased him. After the war, Jack and his family returned to Wilson, where he took a sales position with Hackney Bros. Body Company, where he worked for many years. In 1974, he moved to Wrightsville Beach and lived there and in Wilmington until he became ill. Jack loved to sing and participated in glee clubs and choirs in high school, college and most recently, as a longstanding member of the St. James Episcopal choir in Wilmington. In 1994, he returned to college and graduated from UNC-Wilmington at the age of 82 in 2004.

He is survived by his four sons, Robert Lee Titchener and wife, Lauren Titchener of Portland, Oregon, Walter Edmund Titchener, II and wife, Sara Titchener of Dunn and William Rogers Titchener and John David Titchener, Jr. and wife, Gayle Titchener, all of Raleigh, 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Jack was a man who had no enemies and he will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

The family would like to commend and thank all of the staff at the N.C. Veterans Home in Fayetteville for the consistently excellent care that they provided for Jack during his residence there. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. James Episcopal Church at 25 South 3rd Street Wilmington, NC 28401-4595 or St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church at 202 Goldsboro Street East, Wilson, NC 27893-4004.

                                                        1928-2010

JOSEPH JOHN MEDER

Joseph John Meder, 82, of Wilmington, died peacefully at home on December 17, 2010 after a long courageous battle with cancer. Joe was born in Pittsburgh, PA on May 29, 1928, the son of the late Joseph Cornelius and Anna Friedrich Meder. He graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.
 
 Following college graduation, Joe served 48 months as a Naval Aviator. His Naval career ended abruptly after a plane accident in which he was seriously injured.
 
 Later, he joined the steel industry for 31 years. He started his career working in sales and eventually became a lobbyist in Washington, DC.
 
 Joe will be especially remembered for his sharp wit and adventurous spirit. He had a love of the outdoors and boating, fishing, golfing and hunting.
 
 Joe is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gloria Meder, children, Thomas Meder and Barbara DeBerry, her husband, Bill, and grandchildren Heather, Sarah and Katelyn, plus sisters Genevieve Meder and Ann Thompson and brother-in-law George Thompson, and nephews, Eric, Peter, and Jeffrey. Joe is predeceased by his sister Margaret Meder.
 
 A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews on the Sound Episcopal Church in Wilmington on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.

A. MICHAEL LEAHY, III

1933-2010
 

A. Michael Leahy III of Cary, NC, died Friday, Oct. 15, 2010. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St Jude Catholic Church in Hampstead, NC.


LtCol A. Micheal Leahy III, a Marine Corps Combat Artist, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Oct. 15, 2010, in Cary, North Carolina. He was 77 years old. Born on January 19, 1933, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Albert Michael Leahy III grew up in nearby Somerville, MA.

He served two periods of active duty with the United States Marine Corps. In addition to being a combat artist, LtCol Leahy was a helicopter pilot, and had the honor of flying three presidents: Eisenhower, Kennedy and Nixon. He was a graduate of the Philadelphia University of Art and retired from the Marines in 1980 as LtCol USMCR. At the time of his death, he was painting commissions full-time at the Leahy Studio/Gallery in Cary, North Carolina. His many awards include the Presidential Service Commendation for Executive Flight Detachment HMX-1, and the Bronze Star with Combat "V". Throughout his career, his artwork has been featured on television, including documentary art for the Nataline Series during the 1973 Watergate deliberations. His artwork has appeared in many magazines, including US News&World report and All Hands Magazine. His paintings have been exhibited in the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, VA and other venues.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Kris in 2008. Surviving is his beloved wife of 56 years, Patricia, Cary, North Carolina, a son-in-law, Al, Virginia, a daughter and son-in-law, Erin and Randy, New Jersey, a son and daughter in law, James Edward Martin and Viki, Georgia; and NINE GRANDCHILDREN, Nate, Joseph, Libby, Albert, Sam, Madey, Marty, Gwendy, and Kevin, and one great-grandchild , Nerys. He is survived by five brothers and two sisters.

The family will receive visitors from 1600 - 2000 Monday, October 18,
2010, at Andrews Mortuary Hampstead Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, October 19, 2010, at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, Hampstead, NC. Burial WILL follow at COASTAL CAROLINA STATE VETERANS CEMETERY IN Jacksonville, NC. Alfred "Wes" Magee Jr.
1916-2009

USN RETIRED



CDR. Alfred "Wes" Magee, Jr., 92, of Wilmington, died Wednesday, October 7, 2009, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter.

Wes was born December 14, 1916, in Weehawken, NJ, son of the late Alfred Wesley Magee and Lucy Worth Magee. His wife, Charlotte Norris Magee, and son-in-law, Jerry Ramsey, preceded him in death.

He attended the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton School) and Rutgers University before serving in the U.S. Navy as a fighter pilot in both World War II in the Pacific Theatre and the Korean War. Wes was a highly decorated aviator, including the Air Medal, Navy Unit Commendations, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. He also served aboard the USS Cowpens and the USS Bonhomme Richard. Upon retirement from the Navy, Wes piloted for Timme Corp during the 1960's.

In addition to being a member of the vestry of Church of the Good Shepard, Wes was a member of several retired military and pilot organizations, including, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), Navy League, WWII Remembered, and the Elks.

He is survived by four daughters, Patricia Vaughan (David) of Alexandria, VA, Judith Stant (Peter) of Redding, CT, Leslie Chinappi of Norfolk, VA, and Nancy Martin (John) of Weems, VA, son, A.W. "Pete" Magee, III of Alamosa, CO; stepdaughter, Susan Ramsey of Wilmington, NC; eleven grandchildren, including Matt Ramsey (Kristina) of Leland, NC; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30pm to 8pm Friday, October 9, 2009, at Andrews Market Street Chapel.

A funeral service will be 11am Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Church of the Good Shepard with The Rev. G. Edward Dunlap and The Rev. Margaret Hutchins officiating. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, at a later date.

Cmdr.  Robert Wheatley Ferrin

1922-2007

Robert Wheatley Ferrin, 85, of Wilmington, died on July 7, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Robert was a graduate of the Naval Academy and retired after 20 years as a Commander. After his military service, he went on to work for IBM in procurement and shipping. Robert enjoyed years of travel, after retiring and settled down in Wilmington to be close to his beloved Battleship North Carolina.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janis; one son, Marshall and his wife Peggy Ferrin and their son Ted of Oak Hill, VA; one daughter, Martha and her husband Michael D'Ornellas and their children, Autumn and Zachary of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Joan Jenson of St. Angelo, TX; and one sister-in-law, Joyce Christoffersen, who was maid of honor at Robert and Janis' wedding.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Annapolis, MD.

Garland “Buddy” Everett Bell

1919-2006

 


 

Garland “Buddy” Everett Bell, 87, of Winter Park, FL, and Wilmington, NC, died on June 23, 2006. He was born in Durham, NC, on May 4, 1919, to the late George Everett and Irene Hatcher Bell.

 

Garland attended Cambell College and UNC Chapel Hill and graduated from Rollins College, Winter Park, FL, in 1976. During WWII he served on the USS Tuscaloosa and retired as a Commander and pilot in the US Naval Reserves. He retired from the Federal Aviation Agency in 1975, as a Chief Flight Inspector and was active in his family business: Everett Builders in Wilmington.

 

He is survived by his wife, Caroline W. Bell, of Winter Park, FL, and Wilmington, NC; one son, William Everett Bell and his wife Teresa of Wilmington; one daughter, Carol Bell Sharp and her husband Robert of Mobile, AL; four grandchildren, Leslie Sharp Johnston and her husband Robert also of Mobile, AL, Patricia Bell Shuford and her husband Lindsay of Wilmington, NC, Joshua Everett Bell of Orlando, FL, and Stanley William Sharp of Daphne, AL; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Franklin Durant Bell of Pittsboro, NC; one sister, Winnifred Bell Waters of Wilmington, NC ; six nephew; one niece and many cousins.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 29, 2006, at Pine Valley United Methodist Church from 3-4:00PM, with a memorial service at 4:00PM. The Rev. Bill Braswell will officiate.

 

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to: Habitat for Humanity, Methodist Children’s Home, Mission Teams at Pine Valley UMC or The First United Methodist Church of Winter Park.
